2024 NFL Draft Shocker: Jim Harbaugh’s Pick – JJ McCarthy Over Caleb Williams?

2024 NFL Draft JJ McCarthy

It seems that new Chargers’ head coach, Jim Harbaugh, has stirred up quite the conversation with his belief that Michigan’s JJ McCarthy might be the first quarterback selected in the 2024 NFL Draft. This opinion might raise eyebrows, especially considering the widespread acclaim for Caleb Williams, who has been hailed as the best quarterback prospect since Andrew Luck by many draft analysts.

Game Manager vs Game Changer

Dismissing the prospect of McCarthy being the first pick isn’t entirely straightforward. His impressive two-year run at Michigan, marked by a 28-1 record, 5,710 passing yards, a 68.5% completion rate, 44 touchdowns against just 9 interceptions, and leading the team to a National Championship, certainly makes a compelling case.

This debate seems to echo the perspective shared by former NFL QB Cam Newton regarding the distinction between a “game manager” and a “game changer”. In this context, JJ McCarthy is often viewed as the efficient, reliable “game manager”, while Caleb Williams, with his staggering stats of 8,170 passing yards, 77 passing touchdowns (and only 10 interceptions), in addition to 524 rushing yards and 21 rushing touchdowns, is seen as the explosive “game changer”.

Pick Your Poison

Both quarterbacks have undeniably excelled in their respective roles. McCarthy has been the composed leader in Jim Harbaugh’s pro-style offense at Michigan, guiding the team to their first national championship since 1997. In contrast, Caleb Williams, the dynamic Heisman Trophy winner, has been the driving force of Lincoln Riley’s high-octane Air-Raid offense.

Given that McCarthy was Harbaugh’s quarterback at Michigan, and considering the Chargers are not actively seeking a quarterback, Harbaugh’s comments might be seen more as a nod of confidence towards his former player rather than a serious draft prediction. With the NFL Draft season in full swing, it’s wise to approach such statements with a degree of skepticism and consider them as part of the broader pre-draft narrative.
